Businesses already have reports, dashboards, and alerts. The next step in workflow automation is making it easier to act on what those systems know.

Greater automation makes business controls more important

Not every decision should be automated. Finance, payroll, procurement, and workforce management all include situations where human approval remains necessary because of financial, operational, or compliance implications.

As business automation software and broader enterprise automation take on more work, buyers should ask whether recommendations can be reviewed and overridden, automated actions are recorded, and sensitive transactions can remain behind approval controls.

The goal is not to remove people from every process. It is to reduce unnecessary manual work while preserving human judgment where it matters.

A polished demonstration can make almost any automation look impressive. A better test is to give the ERP vendor situations that already create friction in your business.

Ask what happens when an invoice does not match the purchase order, a customer order cannot be fulfilled, an employee absence affects scheduling, or a late supplier disrupts production.

Follow the problem all the way to resolution

When evaluating AI ERP software, do not stop at what the AI detects. Ask what information it uses, what it recommends, who needs to approve the action, and what happens next.

Following the process from problem to resolution reveals whether AI is genuinely connected to business operations or simply adding another layer of insight.

Five questions reveal whether ERP AI is actually useful

Rather than comparing long lists of AI features, ERP buyers can focus on five practical questions.

What can it see?

Can AI use relevant information across business functions, or is it limited to one application or process?

What can it help the business decide?

Can it identify exceptions, predict requirements, prioritize work, and recommend useful next steps?

What can happen next?

Can an approved recommendation initiate a workflow or action, or must employees still move the process forward manually?

Where does human control remain?

Can actions be reviewed, approved, overridden, and traced when necessary?

Can the operating model scale?

Can the same automation support additional locations, business units, legal entities, employees, and increasingly complex processes?.

Choose ERP for the automation that comes next

Understanding how to choose ERP software increasingly means looking beyond today's AI features. ERP platforms often remain in businesses for years, while AI capabilities are developing much faster.

The underlying data structure, integrations, workflow flexibility, and controls therefore matter as much as individual AI features. More autonomous AI systems and agents will increasingly coordinate activities with less human intervention, but they will still depend on reliable information and connected business processes.
